Thonet is today a pioneer in furniture design worldwide. The German furniture manufacturer is a family-owned company with a prestigious hi ...story. Shortly after its inception, Thonet became a major furniture maker with a global distribution network, always working with famous designers such as Mart Stam, Marcel Breuer, and later Stefan Diez or Naoto Fukasawa. Indeed, the furniture from the Thonet brothers began to have commercial success, particularly thanks to the famous Vienna Café chair Thonet. It was created in 1859 and is considered one of the most successful industrial furniture designs globally. By the late 1920s, Thonet also developed furniture made of steel tubes, in addition to its famous bentwood furniture. Thonet became the world’s largest producer of steel tube furniture in the 1930s. Just as it had with bentwood furniture, steel tube furniture marked an entire generation of designers and is now an integral part of design history. For almost 200 years, Thonet has guaranteed innovative design and new possibilities in furniture manufacturing. Influenced by bistro culture and the Bauhaus aesthetic, Thonet is an exciting example of how a traditional company can find its path to modernity.

The various chairs offered by Thonet perfectly illustrate this. The Chairs N°214 or N°215 with armrests are still well-known today, particularly those with a cane seat and backrest. Another version of this design classic, the Cantilever chair 543, was designed in 1931 by Mart Stam for Thonet, while the Cantilever chair 543 Classics in Colour is a 2014 reissue, for the first time featuring a colored tubular frame. It’s not just the manufacturing technique or the unique design that impresses, but also the remarkable comfort of the seating provided by Thonet chairs and armchairs. Thonet furniture has received many accolades in recent years. One example is the chair 404F, which won a Gold IF Product Design Award in 2009. The entire Thonet collection is available at SILVERA.
